It's the birthday of #HenryCavendish, the man who devoted his life to science --
#Newton had published his law of gravitation in 1687, but he hadn’t made any attempt to determine the constant #G or the mass of Earth. In 1798, Cavendish calculated the #density (and hence the #mass) of the #Earth. His experiment to measure the density of the Earth has come to be known as the Cavendish experiment (he found the density of Earth was 5.48 times the density of water - the currently accepted value is 5.52).
He is noted for his discovery of #hydrogen, (which he termed #inflammable_air) also. He made important discoveries concerning carbon dioxide, atmospheric air, and water.
