HINDI AS OFFICIAL LANGUAGE IN UNESCO
At the present time, there are six working languages of the General Conference (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) and eight official languages (the above plus Hindi and Italian). It was at its second session, held in Mexico in 1947, that the General Conference decided to add Hindi (at the time called Hindustani) to the official languages. Italian became an official language of the General Conference by decision of the Conference at its third session, held in Beirut in 1948.
