inter stellar story
-----------------------------
In near future, earth is getting polluted and exhausted of resources due to which there are frequent dust storms which resulted in extinction of crops like wheat, rice etc. Corn was the one of the last one. In a time where they needed farmers more than engineers their only hopes for survival depends on either saving the crops with bio-technology or finding a place for humans on some another planet. The 2nd possibility is what is shown in the movie where mankind is struggling to find another inhabitable planet nearby.
Now even this plan has further 2 plans, first is finding a planet suitable for human life and the second is taking the varied gene culture of humans to another planet and grow them there leaving all humans behind. The 2nd option was what professor (old guy) was thinking about.
Now the thing where this movie becomes complex is when you see the ghosts and gravitational anomaly in murph's room. This movie dealt with a kind of time travel paradox known as predestination paradox in which a person travels back in time in order to prevent some event but accidently results in triggering the very same event. This kind of paradox is also seen in other movies like Terminator 1 and 12 monkeys etc.
Now NASA was researching for life for a long time by sending manned missions to different planets through a wormhole near the planet of saturn. No one knows who put those wormholes there so we refer them as "they". NASA sent 12 missions to 12 different planets. Their mission was send a signal back to the earth when they find the signs of life on a planet and go to long cryo sleep afterwards waiting for someone else to come and rescue them.
Now the things where it starts becoming complex is when you experience relativity. In simple terms just get this, as you go near a planet with more gravity your time slows down. Now when they were near Miller' planet (named after the person who first went there and sent data back) orbiting a black hole their few hours were actually years on earth. After this they decided to go to Mann's planet.

This is where things got interesting. Also this part is one of my favorite part of the story. As they wake doctor Mann from the cryo sleep, he tells them about the stats about the planet and how it shows prospects of life and water. Actually he was faking all the data so that someone could come and rescue him. In reality there were no prospects of life on that planet. But he could not succeed.
Then at last cooper ended up in a gargantua and brand landed at Edmund's planet which actually was habitable. Cooper soon got inside the wormhole and escaped from gargantua's massive pull. This is where things became even more complex. He ended up inside a 3d projection  of a 5d space created by humans of future. It was a projection of all the events in that bedroom of her daughter murph. The only thing that could flow across dimensions is the effect of gravity. This is where he tries to stop himself from going to space as he realizes there is no life on any planet. So he starts sending signals like coordinates of NASA, sending signals in morse code to stay there. He cries "don't let me leave murph".Meanwhile cooper contacted TARS computer who had the equation of gravity. Cooper sends it through morse code channeling that thing into the second hand of the watch. Her daughter cracked that code and solved the equation of gravity which was unifying the gravity equation on quantum (too small) as well as relativistic (too big) scale. Atlast he is rescued by humans who are finally orbiting near saturn in a giant spaceship.

Interstellar (2014 movie)Why is it possible that gravity could be used to affect the past in the Interstellar movie? Is it based on any real physical theory?

Their thinking probably went like this:
- Our current physical theories do not “see” into black holes. They more or less break inside.
- Time and space inside a black hole is warped so much, some speculate it can even go backwards.
- Besides its angular momentum the only other characteristics of a black hole is its electric charge and mass inferred via its gravitational interactions.
- It is much more easier and straightforward to visualise communication via gravity than via variations in electric charge.

So yes, Interstellar is a fiction that exploits some gaps and open problems in our current state  of science.

As others have stated here, Interstellar is a brilliant science fiction movie that exploits some gaps in modern science. Gravity is able to influence the past inside the black hole because of what the 5th dimension is theorized to be.

Today, we utilize 4 dimensions in physics (save for string theory). These include 3 spatial dimensions and one time dimension, one pathway for time to flow (forward, linear).

The 5th dimension in Interstellar is where gravity and the electromagnetic force have been unified such that it creates a second time dimension, a second pathway for time to flow (forward and backward, non-linear). Time is essentially non existent here and everything that ever has happened or will happen is happening at the same time. There is no event calendar. The past can change the future and the future can change the past. Time becomes a vector quantity. Gravity is not affected by time and time instead becomes relative when influenced by it. Time is dependent on gravity, essentially.

This is why gravity can cross dimensions in the movie.

Hello Chen,
That is a really good question. As I mentioned in my blog, that interstellar has touched on various possible yet unproven facts all at the same time adding elements of curiosity for it's viewers. What Matus has mentioned above is the best possible answer. Love of course remains unchanged with time, but the movie needed more than something like love, it needed a possible physical theory and gravity best fits the scenario where it doesn't get affected by time so that the communication can take place. All other possible theories fall short someway or the other against the test of time. Gravity however is the most viable option. As of now there aren't any proven theory in physics but why not think about the possibility, even I never thought that gravity could be viewed in this angle. Time travel as far as I know never had the concept of gravity involved, and this is the first time this kind of an option has come up. So stay curious and think of the possibilities.

The movie Interstellar is not based on a real physics theroy. That being said the scientific consultant on the film wrote a book called the science of Interstellar which you should check out.
